Cristiana Olcese is an ESRC postdoctoral researcher in the Centre for Citizenship, Globalisation and Governance at the University of Southampton. She is contributing to the Centre's internationally collaborative Caught in the Act of Protest project through qualitative research complementing the project's mainly quantitative emphasis. She will conduct an interview and portraits-based investigation of artist-activists in protests, and will study artists' motives for using expressive and creative media (theatre, films, creative writing, etc.) in the pursuit of social change. Her current research interests concern the polyphony of collective action, the relationships between art and politics in protests, emotions of resistance, and methods of textual analysis. She is also planning new projects on the political role of contemporary art outside of protests, and the relationship between religiosity and inequalities. Previous projects have focussed on urban gentrification and the history of an Italian labour newspaper (Il Lavoro). Cristiana holds a Laurea (summa cum laude) in Political Science and an MA in International Cultural Management from the University of Genoa (Italy), and an MSc in Social Research Methods and PhD in Sociology from the University of Reading (UK).
