Anouk van Leeuwen (1983) works as a PhD candidate at the department of Sociology of the VU-University in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. She focuses on the atmosphere at street demonstrations. More specifically, Anouk studies how the interaction between organisers, demonstrators and the police determines the atmosphere at a street demonstration and which contextual characteristics influence this process. For her research, she applies both quantitative and qualitative research methods.                                                                                                                              Anouk started to work at the VU-University in December of 2009. Between 2007 and 2009 she gained experience on police studies and crowd management at the COT Institute for Safety, Security and Crisis Management (ISSCM). She obtained her Research Master’s degree in Latin American Studies with a focus on (the perception of) violence at the University of Leiden in 2007.
